436 Oakland Ave

Oakland, CA

436 Oakland Avenue is an infill building in a mixed Oakland context.  A geometric apartment box is the neighbor on one side, and a setback shingle house on the other. The site steps up from the road to the rear.

The building bridges the neighbors as a series of geometric terraces climbing the hill and aligning with the setback house. Staircases in the side yards provide access and egress to the 5 stacked units. The base is parking.

The image of the building is a series of geometric frames containing units, enclosed with floor to ceiling sliding glass and clad in white cement board panels.

Each of the five units has a large open plan living space framed by a bar of bedrooms and bathrooms.
