1875 Mission Street

San Francisco, CA

1875 Mission is a robust three-story concrete industrial building with a grid of circular mushroom columns and board form ceilings, being converted into housing.  Demising walls on the column grid divide the units. A lightwell at the central bays creates a courtyard. Pre-manufactured pod elements comprising a kitchen on one side and a bathroom on the other, with closets on either end, and sprinklers and lighting in a soffit, is the single element that domesticates the space and converts it into a home. The etched glass splash of the kitchen lights the bathroom behind. The element is located in the space to outline bedroom, dining and living room. This large piece of furniture is inserted whole though the widow openings and connected in a three-level vertical stack. On the roof is a swimming pool to take advantage of the warmth of the Mission.
