1111 Sunset

Los Angeles, CA

1111 Sunset is a collaboration with a SOM master plan, a Field Operations landscape, a SOM residential tower, a Kengo Kuma Associates Hotel, and a second residential tower by Stanley Saitowitz | Natoma Architects. Our tower continues the search for new Los Angeles form, for sprawl condensed and turned vertical. A six foot wide perimeter zone wraps the four faces of the tower. This band of oscillating bays, balconies, and voids, creates a rich middle field between interior and exterior, open and closed, public and private, an upturned porch hovering in sky. Behind this zone of connection, individual units are sliced. Surrounding the central core and circulation, a thickened wall compacts services. A variety of units including stacked townhouses as well as flats, fill in the gridded tower. At grade, the building floats over a topography of bungalows, cantilevered from its central core. The tower is both singular and varied, a piled up case study houses with delicate frames expanding into air.
