Wurster Hall Auditorium

Berkeley, CA

The auditorium is seen as an instrument.

A place to listen and look.

The speaker on the podium generates the form of the slanted walls and undulating ceiling which radiates the voice.

A voyeurs' gallery overlooks the main seating.

The walls which deflect the sound are Italian Poplar with brass connections. Lights are concealed in their thickness.

The podium is black slate.
The ceiling is white and floats.
A screen descends.

Beyond is grey concrete.

A new lining inhabits an existing shell.
