Rabin House

Tiburon, CA

The Rabin House is on a large uphill site overlooking the Bay off Paradise Drive, in Tiburon. A long winding driveway leads to the building. The house is a boomerang shaped bar, cranked at the center, following the contours and continuing as a series of terraces dissolving into the landscape below and focused on the expansive views of water.

The house is entered through a framed void in the curved center with the family room, kitchen, dining, library and formal living rooms reaching out to the edge of the promontory in one direction. A court with an outdoor fireplace carves into the bar. The opposite wing is a pool/guest house and caretaker’s area.

Bridging the void, an upstairs family room connects the parents wing above the living rooms with the children’s wing above the guest and caretaker’s rooms.

The house is a mirror of the land it occupies. The terraces that contain the hill become floating walls of the long bar building, stepping and folding to contain the spaces within.
